Project description

In the Valttiplus project for physical activity counseling for families, we develop and test training model and support materials to enhance the physical activity counceling for families of children and youth with functional limitations. We aim to improve the effectiveness and quality of cross-sectoral physical activity counseling for families.

The established approaches prevent the social exclusion of children and youth with functional limitations, support them to increase physical activity, and facilitate access to suitable recreational activities. This, in turn, promotes social inclusion and encourages these families to adopt active lifestyles, enhancing the well-being of children, youth, and their families.

The Valttiplus project is a nationwide collaborative project involving three organizations. It is coordinated by the Finnish Paralympic Committee and the project partners are Likes research unit of the Jamk University of Applied Sciences and the Three-Campus Sports Institute. The Finnish Paralympic Committee's national Valtti Program serves as the shared development platform for the project.

The project has three main objectives:

1. The Finnish Paralympic Committee enhances the skills of Valtti advisors and supports their ability to engage and motivate children and youth with functional limitations, as well as their families, by developing training and support materials,

2. The Three-Campus Sports Institute promotes the ability of physical activity counseling students and professionals to work effectively in adaptive physical activity guidance and counseling by improving their interaction skills.

3. The Likes research unit at Jamk University of Applied Sciences supports professionals in physical activity counseling for families to recognize the needs and participation opportunities of children and youth with functional limitations and their families by developing practices that promote inclusivity and client-centered approaches.
