Project description
In the OVE - practical training project, we are developing a new kind of multicultural module practice model for nursing. Our goal is to strengthen the competence of nurses supervising module practices in language awareness, cultural sensitivity and the skills of guiding a multicultural group. With the new operating model and the strengthening of nurses' competence, the integration of foreign-language speaking students into the work community will become easier and their Finnish language skills will be strengthened.

Key measures of the project include:

Creating an OVE - practical training model: We will develop a student-led, multicultural module practice model. This means that Finnish-speaking and foreign-language speaking students train together as a team. They are responsible for common patients under the guidance of professionals. They also act as peer tutors for each other. During the project, we will organize a total of 11–12 OVE internships in four different departments in Nova.

Development of guidance skills: We will train approximately 120–140 care workers to guide foreign-language speaking students and multicultural teams. The aim of the coaching is to strengthen the instructors' cultural sensitivity, language awareness, group guidance skills and understanding of the importance of diversity in the work community.

Creating a coaching package for instructors: We will prepare a coaching package aimed at instructors of multicultural module practices. The package will include material to strengthen language awareness, guidance skills and cultural sensitivity, as well as practical guidance material that will facilitate the supervision of multicultural module exercises. We will produce video material that supports student guidance and helps tutors better understand the needs of foreign-language speaking students.

Coaching instructor mentors: Finally, we will coach 4–6 instructor mentors, who will implement the model further in new departments also after the project has ended.

Cooperation between practical training units and Jamk: We will intensify cooperation between the training units and JAMK University of Applied Sciences. We will develop forms of cooperation and communication. We will also support supervisors in leading a multicultural work community.

Through these measures, we aim to strengthen nurses' competence and courage to guide foreign-language speaking students and multicultural teams. This will improve the employment opportunities of foreign-language speaking students in Central Finland and promote multicultural cooperation in the care sector.
