Project
Optimizing the Harvest Time of Silage
Project sponsors
In the project 'Optimizing the Harvest Time of Silage,' the use of Polispec and AgriNIR-NIR-analyzers and drones is being tested and developed to determine the optimal harvest time for silage and to assess the quantity and quality of the yield. Testing activities are conducted throughout the growing season in the experimental environments of the Bioeconomycampus in Tarvaala, Saarijärvi, and on farms that are part of the innovation group. The results obtained with the aforementioned methods are further verified with laboratory samples and weighings. Based on the data and information obtained in the project, a model/tool will be created to optimize the harvesting of silage.
The target group of the project is dairy farmers. The methods and results can also be utilized by other livestock farms that produce silage, such as sheep farms, beef cattle farms, and meat cattle farms. The other beneficiaries of the project are livestock farms producing silage in the project area, machine contractors, and crop farms. Through project communication and networks, the benefits will also be disseminated nationwide. The results of the project will also benefit advisory and educational organizations working with livestock farms.
The project implementation period is from June 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026. The project is implemented by the Institute of Bioeconomy at JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Savonia University of Applied Sciences, and the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) of the National Land Survey of Finland.
