Project description

The goal of
the project is to develop and test a data-based platform that improves the
emission calculation and reporting of the agricultural plastic value chain.
Platform also offers a possibility for users to see and understand what the
consequences of their own decisions for the climate are. In the longer term the
goal is to reduce the use of virgin plastic and replace it with recycled raw
materials.

Project
develops the environmental responsibility know-how of farmers by understanding
and calculating emissions and by understanding the principles of nature
footprint calculation. Project also develops farmers' capabilities concerning
the tightening requirements of sustainability reporting. Project offers an easy
way for farmers to calculate emission of agricultural plastic value chain by
developing a suitable platform and tool for calculations. With the help of the
simulation tool on the platform, farmers can see and understand the consequences
of their decisions. For example, how the level of emissions change whether the
used plastics are burnt or reused? Project enables more accurate forecasts of
agricultural plastic quantities for farmers by using/analyzing the collected
data. The circular economy platform ecosystem produces significant added value
for the ecosystem's various actors. In addition to efficient information
exchange, it promotes new product innovations and the use and development of
various services for primary production and rural areas.

The main
target groups of the project are agricultural and horticultural farms. The
operating area comprises the regions of the Finnish Lakeland: Central Finland,
North and South Savo, North Karelia, and Southeast Finland.

The project
is funded by the European agricultural fund for rural development: Europe
invests in rural areas.

The project
is administered and implemented by the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences
Taking part in the implementation of the project is an innovation group
comprising a farmer's procurement circle in Saarijärvi, the regional
organisations of the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners
(MTK) in Finnish Lakeland, the national MTK organisation, Rani Plast Oy,
Lantmännen Agro Oy, Wimao Ltd., Clean Plastic Finland Oy, Itä-Suomen
MurskauskeskusOy, Finnish Plastics Recycling Ltd., and the Finnish Plastics
Industries Federation.

Project results

The main result of the eMuovi platform ecosystem development project was the development and release of the eMuovi application. The application can calculate the carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the production, use, disposal, and recycling of agricultural plastics. In addition to emissions, the application also calculates the costs associated with the handling of agricultural plastics. The application provides users with concrete information and tips on how they can further reduce their emissions and costs, thereby acting more environmentally responsibly. Users can compare their results with other farms in the same production sector, which helps them understand their performance relative to others. The application also generates a statistical view based on the entered data and calculations. The application is primarily intended for primary producers, but also for other actors in the agricultural plastic value chain and those interested in emission calculations.

The eMuovi project also investigated the principles and current state of nature footprint calculation related to agricultural plastics. In summary, it can be stated that the nature footprint calculation of agricultural plastics is still in its early stages and is not widely practiced. Currently, the calculation requires deep specialized knowledge of the calculations and the databases used, and user-friendly nature footprint calculators are not yet available.

After the project ended, the eMuovi application was transferred to the ownership of MTK and became part of their KiertoaSuomesta.fi digital marketplace. The application continues to operate after the project in an environment that includes other applications and tools managed by MTK that promote the circular economy in agriculture and forestry. From the perspective of the impact of the project's results, it can be thought that the application reaches users well through the site managed by MTK. The eMuovi application is open and free for all users. In the long term, it is expected that the eMuovi application will help develop the emission calculation of agricultural plastics and the understanding of primary producers about environmentally responsible practices.
