Physical
activity and cognition (PALCOLL) - Effects of physically active lifestyle on cognitive learning prerequisites throughout the lifespan study
PALCOLL study aims to determine how physically active lifestyle is associated
with cognitive, academic, and professional performance in different stages of
life. The study increases scientific understanding of the potential of
physically active lifestyle to maintain, optimize and enhance cognitive
prerequisites of learning throughout the lifespan.
In more
detail, the present study determines how physically active lifestyle is associated
with cognitive, academic, and professional performance in different stages of
life, how accumulation and changes of physical activity from childhood to
middle-age affect changes in cognitive function in middle-age, what factors
modify these effects and whether these possible improvements in cognition can
be traced into professional performance later in life.
The data
from four large cohort populations is utilized to answer the research questions
in collaboration with the University of Turku, the University of Jyväskylä and
the international network of collaborators. The study is leaded by Principal
Researcher Tuija Tammelin co-leaded by Senior Researcher Heidi Syväoja from
Likes, Jamk University of Applied Sciences. Project is funded by Ministry of Education and Culture.
