This tailor-made programme gives Chinese students the opportunity to graduate from Jamk with the title “Master of Health Care”. The programme takes two years of fulltime studies and is conducted in English through a co-implementation by Finnish teachers from Jamk and Chinese teachers from SJTUSM.
The aim of the Master programme is to educate advanced nursing practitioners who seamlessly combine clinical leadership, research, and innovations to advance clinical excellence. The programme prepares experts who can effectively transform research into practice and provide holistic care in complex clinical situations. It also offers the learner an excellent opportunity to specialize in clinical nursing pedagogy and gerontological nursing.
“We are eager to support Chinese students to fulfil their potential on their journey to advanced level in clinical practice” proclaim Jamk’s Chief Specialist Johanna Heikkilä and Principal Lecturer Hanna Hopia, who will act as the main experts of the new programme.
The entrance exam was organised in Shanghai in autumn 2024, and on the 10th of January 2025, an opening ceremony for the pilot group was held. The accepted students and SJTUSM staff gathered on the SJTUSM campus while the Jamk team joined the ceremony online. Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland, Olli Suominen (Counsellor, Education and Science, Embassy of Finland in China) and Lukia Yang (Programme Officer, EDUFI Shanghai Office) also participated to announce their strong support to the collaboration.
Students of the pilot group begun their studies right after the opening ceremony and will complete their first-year studies at the School of Continuing Education of SJTUSM in Shanghai. The second-year studies will be organised in Finland at Jamk School of Health and Social Studies. The studies in China will be conducted with a blended method and include both remote and face-to-face teaching with teachers from Jamk travelling to Shanghai.
This tailored APN Master programme is the first Master-level degree programme by a Finnish university of applied sciences in China. Jamk has been an active practitioner as one of the Finnish pioneers in international cooperation concerning higher education and RDI in China, especially in the field of health care. The co-implementation partner, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is one of the best universities in China with a remarkable reputation worldwide.
The cooperation marks Jamk’s second tailor-made Master programme in Advanced Practice Nursing: the first was implemented in cooperation with Kazakh Medical University of Continuing Education, Kazakhstan, during 2017-2021. The programme had two intakes in 2017 and 2018 and yielded 39 graduates of Master of Health Care.
