Senior Advisor, Doctor of Health Sciences Johanna Heikkilä from JAMK School of Health and Social Studies has been granted the title of Docent (Associate Professor) in Clinical caring science at Åbo Academi University, Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies. The docentship, which is the first of its kind in Finland, was granted by Åbo Akademi Chancellor Carl G. Gahmberg and brings to the forefront the research in clinical caring science.
- The docentship is an acknowledgement of my academic accomplishments. It highlights the significance of nurses’ advanced career development as well as the twenty-year development of the research and pedagogy in the field. I see the title as a sign of appreciation for the special expertise of nurses as well, Heikkilä celebrates.
Dr. Heikkilä has widespread national and international networks, through which her research work has contributed to the development of clinical nursing science as well as nursing education with important new information. She has led several research and development projects, for which she has received funding from various funding sources.
- The current reorganization of health and social services into health and social services counties will increase the need for expertise in clinical nursing and its management. This makes both advanced nursing practice and the career development of nurses highly topical thematic areas for research, Heikkilä mentions.
JAMK School of Health and Social Studies has been developing the job descriptions of advanced practice nurses in several projects together with regional working life partners. The master’s degree programme in Advanced Nursing Practice has become a strong and attractive programme, in which Heikkilä has guided tens of master’s theses.
JAMK has been a forerunner in developing the nurse prescriber education in Finland, where Heikkilä has acted as the chair of the coordinating network for 10 years now. She has also played a major role in developing nursing education in Finland and Kazakhstan.
- This docentship supports the evidence-based implementation of degree-awarding education in health care as well as strengthens the continuing research cooperation especially in international nursing science networks. Through joint projects, we work in close cooperation with ministries, higher education institutions, and public and private healthcare organisations both in Finland and in Central Asia. With our expert team, we aim to develop person-centred, effective, and accessible healthcare services and to export the high-quality Finnish nursing education system globally, Heikkilä says.
