The City of Jyväskylä
Jyväskylä is located in Central Lakeland Finland, and its population is almost 150 000. It is famous for Alvar Aalto's architecture attractions and is also known as the Sports Capital of Finland.
A City of Nature
Jyväskylä is situated by the Lake Päijänne, which is the second largest lake in Finland. Several other lakes surround the beautiful town on all sides.
Just a stone’s throw away from the conference venue you can find the Lutakko Harbour and the Rantaraitti walking trail that runs along the lakeside. There is also a beautiful nature trail called Tourujoki Nature Trail only a 10 minute walk away from the city centre!
Sightseeing in Jyväskylä City Centre
In the city center, you can find many attractions within walking distance of each other.
The main pedestrian street Kauppakatu runs through the city center, along the church and all the way to the oldest University Campus in town, which also houses a small scientific museum.
A little detour away is the historical Toivola Courtyard with a Coppersmith’s House Museum and several craft shops.
Behind the city center, the Nero Stairs lead to the top of the Harju Ridge, where you can visit the viewing tower and natural science museum.
Other museums in town include the Handicrafts Museum, the Arts Museum and the Aalto2 Museum Center by the Seminaarinmäki University Campus.
Souvenirs and Local Specialties
We highly recommend you to try local delicacies and buy local, responsibly produced souvenirs to take home with you. This will support the local businesses and livelihoods as well as the well-being of the environment while offering you an authentic glimpse of Finnish culture and tradition.
Local design and crafts:
For local design and crafts from Jyväskylä we recommend the shops around Toivola courtyard, Taito shop, Ellin kirja, and KOTO design market.
Tea and coffee:
Delicious local tea can be found in Teeleidi teahouses as well as the Take-T tea shop, and for coffee drinkers we recommend locally roasted coffee from Papu.
Chocolate and licourice:
You can find locally made chocolate and licorice from the Panda brand from regular supermarkets.
Finnish design:
For famous Finnish design like Marimekko, Iittala, and Aalto products, head to the Sokos shopping center, the Marimekko shop, or the Aalto shop.
Sustainability & Responsibility
In Finland and at Jamk, we strive to pay special attention to sustainability and responsibility. Jamk has also signed the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and warmly encourages other organizations in tourism business to join.
The measures taken for sustainability and responsibility aim to protect the environment, support local businesses and livelihoods, and ensure an enjoyable experience for conference participants through involvement in local life and culture.
The principles of sustainability and responsibility guide the organization of the ICTR as well.
We encourage conference participants to use public transport instead of flying or driving to Jyväskylä, and explore the city on foot in order to reduce carbon emissions, get personal health benefits and gain a more authentic experience of our town and its local life.
Likewise, we recommend participants to shop and eat in small local businesses that serve locally and responsibly sourced goods and delicacies, such as the ones mentioned in the 'Souvenirs' section above. We have also highlighted some accommodation providers that are proven to take responsibility and environmental issues into account in their business.
Recycling and Waste Minimisation
On campus and at the conference venue, you can find separate, clearly marked recycling bins.
In addition to recycling, we take other measures to avoid waste. All conference materials, including programme and conference proceedings, will be provided in an electronic format. We also ask conference participants to return their badges for recycling at the end of the conference.
Catering and Water
The catering for the conference emphasises local and seasonal, climate friendly foods. We encourage conference participants to avoid food waste by serving themselves moderate amounts of food and going for a second round if necessary.
Finnish tap water is perfectly safe to drink – actually, the water in Finland is one the purest in the world. Hence, we recommend switching bottled water or soda to filling your reusable bottle with tap water.
