From December 2 to December 6, 2024, the EU co-funded PalcNet project stepped forward with a success of completing the second “Train-the-trainer” (TtT2) programme at Guangzhou Health Science College (GHSC). The PalcNet project is led by Jamk University of Applied Sciences, Finland, in collaboration with other six partner institutions from the Netherlands, Spain and China. The project aims to enhance the competence of educators, professionals, and students to advance palliative care education and training in China, ultimately improving the quality of life for its citizens.

The TtT2 featured lectures and workshops by leading experts consisting of Professor Míriam Rodríguez Monforte from Ramon Llull University, Spain, Senior Lecturer Judith Yabal from Jamk University of Applied Sciences, and experts from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, China, including Directors Guo Na and well-known experts Ning Xiaohong, Zheng Ying, Liu Qian, and Sha Rui in the field of palliative care. During the programme week, trainers’ academic expertise, clinical experience, and forward-looking perspectives provided participants with insights into the latest practices and concepts in palliative care. Through diverse activities such as group works and case studies, participants expanded their knowledge and honed professional skills and empathy.

The TtT2 programme also included a field visit to the Guangzhou Elderly Home, offering participants firsthand experience of palliative care practices and valuable insights of local environment.

A key component of the TtT2 was the development of three new courses in accordance with the PalcNet project plan: Comprehensive Palliative Care, Person-Centered Palliative Care and Counseling, and Digital Communication in Palliative Care. Pilot of these new courses are scheduled in autumn 2025, expected to significantly impact palliative care education and practice in both Europe and China.

At the closing ceremony of TtT2, the Rector of Guangzhou Health Science College Yu Sha congratulated the participants on the programme’s success. She expressed gratitude for the engagement and contributions of all experts and participants.

The success of TtT2 execution was attributed to the operation mechanism of the PalcNet project and the meticulous organization by GHSC. It fostered collaboration and exchange among Chinese domestic and international professionals, equipping participants with cutting-edge knowledge and skills, as well as broadening their global perspective and deepening their understanding of palliative care in diverse cultural contexts.

Looking ahead, PalcNet project consortium will continue strengthening partnerships with all partner institutions. Not only GHSC, but other three Chinese organizations also aim to disseminate and apply the outcomes of the TtT2 to cultivate more nursing professionals with both technical expertise and a humanistic approach.
