On April 3, 2025, the Digi Champions training programme continued its journey in Kigali, Rwanda. This face-to-face training was led by Sami Suhonen and Jussi Savolainen from TAMK, while colleagues from Jamk participated online. The training day was packed with insightful discussions and collaborative activities aimed at enhancing digital pedagogy and exploring the transformative impact of AI on education.

Interesting topics discussed

This time, the participants discussed a very current topic on how AI is shaping the educational landscape. Interestingly, the African AI summit took place at same time as the project’s training, further emphasising the importance of the topic.

During the training. participants delved into the ways artificial intelligence is revolutionising education. They considered it offering more personalised learning experiences to different learners and possibilities in automating administrative tasks. Another topic related to digital transformation focused on learning analytics. The session highlighted the importance of data-driven information in improving educational outcomes and tailoring learning experiences to individual needs.

Collaborative work

The training also focused on practical aspects of digital pedagogy, supporting the learning circle groups’ teamwork and exchange of ideas. Additional boost and support were given to the learning circle groups so that they can continue to work on their pilots and test some new digital learning tools or practices. Participants were guided through the next steps in their digital pedagogy journey, and a brief session on Moodle environment was offered to remind them of its use during the training process.

Reflective discussions are a crucial part of collaborative learning, and therefore a significant part of the training was dedicated to it. Discussions related to the opportunities and threats posed by the new digital learning landscape. Using the Me-We-Us method, participants shared their perspectives and collaboratively explored strategies on how to stay up-to-date with this evolving digital environment.

Africa AI Summit

Digi Champions had a great opportunity to learn more as coinciding with their training, the first Africa AI Summit took place in Kigali on April 3-4, 2025. This landmark event brought together African leaders, tech executives, and international organizations to shape Africa's approach to AI governance and development. Hosted by Rwanda’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, the summit aimed to empower Africa to become a "standard-maker, not standard-taker" in global AI governance.

The summit featured discussions on AI policy, ethical considerations, and strategies for leveraging AI to drive sustainable development across the continent. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the Africa AI Summit set the stage for a future where Africa leads in the global AI landscape.

Journey continues

The Digi Champions training and Africa AI Summit offered new ideas for all on their journey towards a digitally empowered education in Rwanda. As participants continue to explore and implement new digital practices, the collaborative spirit and innovative ideas generated during the training days will eventually shape the future of education.
