HELPE - Health Literacy in Physiotherapy Education

vuorovaikutukseen liittyviä toimintamalleja. Jotta näihin tarpeisiin voidaan
vastata, on fysioterapeuttien saatava riittävää terveydenlukutaito-osaamista jo
perusopintojensa aikana.
Projektin tarkoituksena on kehittää terveydenlukutaidon opetusta ja ymmärrystä fysioterapeuttien koulutusohjelmissa ympäri Eurooppaa. Projekti toteutetaan yhteistyössä Itävallan, Hollannin, Espanjan ja Saksan yhteistyö korkeakoulujen kanssa.
Projektin tulokset
HELPE targeted firstly to increase knowledge and content of Health Literacy in Physiotherapy education. Secodly all the developed materials and innovations could be taken in to use in other health care professions. During HELPE project were created HANDBOOK-tool where all the project results and outputs have been collected in a handbook format.
Key content and results of HELPE project:
WP 1 Health Literacy Framework
The HL Framework summarizes the existing evidence and best practises as well as the joint HL competencies of all partners.
1) scoping literature reviews on HL contents
2) questionnaire to evaluate HL competencies in PT students
3) evaluation of HL knowledge and level of skills of students in every organisation (min. 20 students/HEI)
4) collection available methods for training on HL to ensure further development in other WP´s
WP 2 Health Literacy Courses
The development of the HLC were based on the results from the WP 1 and included systematic establishment of theoretical and practical contents, materials and tools that will be used in physiotherapy (and other related professions) education to support teaching and learning HL competencies.
WP 3 Educational video materials
The 'Educational videos' are video recorded real-life practical training scenarios, which were organized and supervised by teachers and professional physiotherapists, and performed by the students at each partner university.
IO3 was coordinated by the partners from JAMK (FIN) because of their expertise in development of educational videos and in Participatory and Empowering Video Analysis (PEVA) model.
1) Manuscripts based on IO1 and IO 2
2) Familiarisation and education of PEVA
3) Education in videorecordings
4) Development of reflection tool questionnaire
5) Student recruitment, students PEVA process (including reflection tool), videorecordings in live therapy sessions and editing videos
6) Final adjustments to videos and reflection tool after the LTYTA in Barcelona
The 'Educational videos' are innovative tool because they provide structured training scenarios using the PEVA model. The educational videos developed with the model enhance students' self-reflection skills.
The developed videos have impact on physiotherapy students, teachers, PT professionals, health care centres/organizations and can be used both, for teaching at the university and for internal training in the health care organizations. They enable the PT students to work efficiently in real-life professional scenarios with clients and to practice their counselling skills. The integration of 'Educational videos' in the students' practical training improves their critical thinking (by providing feedback), and verbal/non-verbal communication with clients. These video materials are suitable for demonstrating interviews and strategies for instructions of individuals from specific client groups (older people, chronic illness patients, patients with low economic status, education and migration background).
After discussion with the Head of department at each partner HEI selected recorded video sessions will be integrated to relevant courses in the existing curricula. The educational videos will be also transferred to the clinical centres working with various client groups in support of the local PT professionals and students who practice in these centres. The videos are available on the HL Moodle Platform and protected with password. The other IO3 materials (i.e. PEVA model video, teacher's manual) have a free access via the HELPE homepage.
WP 4 HL Handbook
Handbook is based on the project results and created in the form of manual to be used for teaching and training HL in the PT education. The HL Handbook will be used as guideline for students, teachers and PT supervisors in practical training.
